The aim of this project was o identify potential weaknesses in the wayfinding system of the Kyiv's boom shelters and to propose coherent recommendations to systematise and unify the overall system of design rules that can be used for subsequent implementation in civilian defence projects.

Problem: Regardless of diversity, there are both developed shelters that are up to par and shelters in terrible condition. At the same time, none of the persuasions follow monotony or any recognizable design code.

In addition, the shelters themselves are purely function (which is not a bad thing), but the form is given 0 attention, which answers the question of where to place people, but does not answer the question of how to place them and what to do with them next.

After an research of the use of colours in existing projects, it would be concluded that the colours used are too dull and faded, contributing to psychological pressure. Considering that the target users of the shelter are already under enough psychological pressure, the palette was redesigned and brighter pastel colours were chosen, which would shift the perception of the atmosphere from gloomy to a less cheerful (as much as possible) state.

The concept of colour codification has been worked out. Each room of the space was identified by its own colour, both on the groundplan and in the physical room itself.

An attempt was made to develop an icon system based on the stylistic parameters of the Frutiger font. The smooth straight lines of the lower gimentos are combined with rounded elements of the transitional parts.

The choice of materials was made for durable solutions, as bins are often rarely serviced and remain closed for long periods of time. The real situation shows that the current material choices have not stood the test of time and factors such as rust, mould and delamination are a frequent problem.
